Tribute to my mother
Smt. VEDAM SRINIVASAN
A LIFE LIVED IN SURRENDER AND SERVICE
Some lives are shaped not by comfort, but by courage. Smt. Vedam’s life was one such—marked by repeated trials and quiet triumphs, where faith became her refuge and patience her constant companion. As it is often said, “A mother’s strength is not measured by the absence of hardship, but by her ability to stand firm through every storm.”
Smt. Vedam, fondly called “ Athiya” attained Acharyan Thiruvadi on Monday,5th January 2026, at 5.21 pm, on the sacred day of Margazhi 21–Thrithiyai Thithi, Krishna paksham. She lived a long life of 93 years, marked not by ease, but by extraordinary endurance, unwavering faith and quiet dignity. Born on 17th November 1932 in chennai to Smt. Ranganayaki and Sri Santhana Gopala Iyengar, Smt.Vedam was the youngest among four siblings, in a traditional house hold grounded in enduring values. Her marriage to Sri N.Srinivasan on18th January 1948 at the sacred precincts of Sri Ahobila Mutt, Tirumala, ushered in a six-decade long married life marked by shared values, devotion and mutual respect.
Blessed with three sons—Sri S. Kasturi Rangan, Sri S. Raman
and Sri S. Vasu—and two daughters—Selvi Vijayalakshmi and Smt.Vasumathi
Muralidharan, her life revolved entirely around her family. Like many mothers,
she gave without counting the cost, embodying the truth that a mother’s heart is the first school patience
and sacrifice.
Life, however, placed before her a succession of emotional
trials. From infancy, her daughter Selvi Vijayalakshmi was afflicted by a rare
illness, requiring lifelong care until her passing on 28th April 2004. For
decades, Smt. Vedam lived the unspoken truth that “God tests the strongest
hearts with the heaviest responsibilities ” She bore it all with motherly
devotion and quiet surrender.
This was soon followed by the loss of her husband
Sri.N.Srinivasan on 29th April 2008 plunging her into deep
loneliness. Physical afflictions followed—thigh fractures in 2015 and 2019,
leaving her almost completely immobile thereafter. In her final years, memory
loss further dimmed her physical world, though her spiritual core remained
steadfast and unshaken. As if fate demanded yet more, she endured the heart
breaking loss of her third son Sri S Vasu on 24th June 2024.Yet through every
phase of trial, she stood firm, affirming that “A mother’s resilience often
speaks loudest in silence.”
Deeply God-fearing, Smt.Vedam Srinivasan drew strength from
unwavering devotion. Lighting lamps before the Navagraha Perumals was her daily
ritual. In her prime, she under took a 48-day mandalam vow at Sholingur,
circumambulating Sri Lakshmi Narasimhar and Sri Anjaneyar 108 times each day,
accompanied by her daughter Vijayalakshmi—an act that reflected not merely
devotion but remarkable physical and mental discipline. Her life echoed the
belief that “When a mother kneels in prayer, generations stand protected.”
In the final decade of her life, when Smt.Vedam Srinivasan
was most vulnerable, her eldest son, Sri S. Kasturi Rangan, became her unwavering pillar. From
her first fall in 2015—and completely from 2019 onwards—he dedicated himself
entirely to her care.
Smt. Vedam’s life, though strewn with sorrow, was rich in
meaning. She faced every trial with faith, every loss with dignity and every
responsibility with grace. She stood like a rock through repeated storms,
surrendering her pain at the feet of the Divine and dedicating herself wholly
to her family. Her legacy lives on—not merely in memories, but in the values
she transmitted.
May Smt. Vedam’s noble soul attain eternal peace at
Acharyan Thiruvadi!
Om Shanti! Om
Shanti!! Om Shanti!!!-
